A team comprising of senior executives from Apple Inc. will head down to India from the US next week to present their proposal to the Indian government, seeking tax benefits and exemptions on setting up a factory in the country. Representatives from Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (CIM), Department Of Revenue (DOR), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) among others are believed to be present for the Jan 25 meeting that will be held in the capital. Apple will be looking to acquire a 15-year custom duty exemption on imports and various other tax incentives to start a manufacturing facility in India. In an earlier attempt, the Cupertino giant was denied sanction by the finance ministry when it had asked for a 30 percent waiver on the local sourcing norm for opening retail outlets in the country. If permitted, Apple has already planned to set-up an assembly unit in Bengaluru and begin production by the end of this year. Xiaomi, Huawei, Gionee and the likes are already manufacturing their products in India without demanding any incentive from the government. As such, some government officials are skeptical about allowing Apple the exemptions and incentives, when none of their competitors has asked for the same. Under the Make in India campaign, more than 11 crore mobile phones have been manufactured in India since the last year and it has become one of the biggest sectors in the electronic manufacturing business.
