Hyperloop One – Elon Musks’ idea of traveling in a pod-like vehicle at speeds up to 1,200 kmph through a near-vacuum tube might just come to India. The futuristic mode of transportation is inspired by the pneumatic tube transport system that was used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the transportation of small objects and packages over short distances. The description on the company’s website reads, “Hyperloop is a new way to move people and things at airline speeds for the price of a bus ticket. It's on-demand, energy-efficient and safe. Think: broadband for transportation.” Back in the month of May last year, the ‘Hyperloop One Global Challenge’ attracted 2,600 teams of engineers and planners from around the globe, out of which 35 finalist groups were announced on Friday. Among these 35, “We want to have three routes in production in the next five years,” said Rob Lloyd, CEO for Hyperloop One, to Inverse. Hyperloop One is considering 5 potential routes in India – Chennai to Bengaluru, Mumbai to Chennai, Mumbai to Delhi, Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram and Pune to Mumbai, where it can start the system. As such, the company will be a host to three showcases, the first one being held in New Delhi on February 28. The Los Angeles-based company will also invite government personnel to these showcases and present them with the potential of this blazing fast transport system. Nick Earle, Global Field Operation says “feedback from government will determine if Hyperloop One selects a region.” After getting a nod from the government, studies to assess the feasibility of the project in the selected region will be carried out. In India however, from hurdles like the land acquisition, funding, uneven typography and the numerous approvals required from the government, the initiation of this Hyperloop project might be a distant dream, but if it somehow takes off, it will transform the way people travel.
